Eight Dimensions of Wellness?

(Whole Wellness)

Eight pillars sustain holistic health and wellness: physical, nutritional, emotional, social, spiritual, intellectual, financial, and environmental. The pillars will give you a sense of how to work toward your optimal wellness. These dimensions are interconnected, one dimension building on another.

  • Physical Wellness- Physical wellness consists of recognizing the need for physical activity, healthy foods, and sleep, as well as preventing illness and injury or managing chronic health conditions.

  • Nutritional Wellness- the celebration and education of cooking and healthy food choices, its impact on mental health, and exploring the physical and emotional relationship humans have with food.

  • Emotional Wellness- the ability to successfully handle life's stresses and adapt to change and difficult times. It also helps you communicate with other people and contribute to society. Your emotional health affects your physical health. Research shows a link between an upbeat mental state and physical signs of good health. These include lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease, and a healthier weight.

  • Social Wellness- refers to the relationships we have and how we interact with others. Our relationships can offer support during difficult times. Social wellness involves building healthy, nurturing, and supportive relationships as well as fostering a genuine connection with those around you.

  • Spiritual Wellness- expanding a sense of purpose and meaning in life, including one's morals and ethics. It may or may not involve religious activities.

  • Intellectual Wellness- recognizes creative abilities and encourages us to find ways to expand our knowledge and skills. Intellectual wellness can be developed through personal and professional development, cultural involvement, community involvement and personal hobbies.

  • Financial Wellness- the ability to meet basic needs and manage money for the short- and long-term.

  • Environmental Wellness- being aware of nature, our environment, andour immediate surroundings. It is about protecting the environment and protecting ourselves from environmental threats.
